Portillo's menu reads like a tribute to Chicago’s food culture. The classic Chicago Dog bursts with bold flavors from all the traditional toppings, though seasoned guests hint at enjoying these toppings on the side to tailor the perfect bite. For burger lovers, the char-broiled cheeseburger is a dream come true: a 1/3 pound juicy patty nestled on a freshly toasted, old-fashioned style bun, layered with crisp lettuce, ripe tomato, sliced onions, pickles, mayonnaise, and ketchup—each mouthwatering element harmonizing into a satisfying experience.
If you're in the mood to share, the jumbo chicken tenders and jumbo French fries hit the spot—golden, crispy, and ready to be dipped in their famous cheese sauce for an extra indulgence. Sweet tooths will appreciate the chocolate cake slice and strawberry shortcake, desserts that close the meal on a delightfully decadent note.
Beyond the food, Portillo’s offers some quirky and fun merchandise that fans adore—like the iconic Portillo’s cup keychain, a cake shake air freshener that turns your car into a chocolate paradise, and even a fry stress reliever toy, all adding to the brand’s unique charm.
Customer reviews speak volumes about the Portillo’s experience. Jan Pytela notes the takeout-focused setup and appreciates the availability of beer on tap, highlighting the staff’s efficiency even during busy periods. Peter Bonamici’s vivid description of dipping a chili dog in a chocolate cake milkshake perfectly encapsulates the merry spirit and culinary adventure Portillo’s inspires. Other diners like Xunaxhi MR commend the fast service and inviting vibe, while Tyanne Bland admires the friendly staff and unique dining environment that make Portillo’s more than just a quick meal, but a fun Chicago experience.
Whether you’re a local craving a reliable classic or a visitor eager to taste an essential slice of Chicago, Portillo’s Chicago – Canal and Taylor delivers bold flavors, generous portions, and a spirited atmosphere that’s as memorable as the food itself.
I have been waiting to try Portillo's for 3 years. I'm so happy I finally got to try them. Now, if you have texture issues, I would recommend not getting every single topping on the hot dog. Maybe get them on the side and try it as you go. All together the flavors are great! But can be overwhelming on the classic hot dog. Great flavors all around. Not too expensive. The place the spacious. Plenty of dine-in space. Had great parking (Their own dedicated parking lot) and even has a drive thru if you're not interested in dine-in or pick up inside. Will definitely return to try their cake shakes I have heard people rave about.
Overall this was a good experience of the classic Chicago Dog. Just beware that it seems to be heavy take-out/ pre-order focused. I waited around 15 minutes. There were just a few customers and 20+staff preparing one order after another. On the plus side, you can get beer on tap here.
Cant hate the classics, always love dipping my chili dog inside my cake milkshake like a true chicagoan. The lady behind me saw me do this and visibly gagged and made a wrenching noise which wasn’t nice but I thought it was delicious. 10/10 love Portillos.
Portillo’s is one of those places where the vibe hits you right away, super unique with a vintage charm that makes you feel like you just stepped into a time capsule (the tastiest one). Ordering was easy thanks to their self-serve kiosk, and the food came out fast so always a win when you’re starving. Now, let’s talk about the food: I went for the Maxwell Street Polish, cheese fries, and a milkshake. Everything was so tasty, but beware… portions here are no joke. The milkshake alone was massive, and as much as I loved it, I couldn’t finish it. If you’re hungry, craving comfort food, and want to soak up some nostalgic vibes, Portillo’s is absolutely worth the stop!
Portillo’s definitely offers a unique and fun dining experience! The two-story setup with its café-style seating and art deco touches makes it feel lively and full of character. The staff was super friendly and upbeat, keeping the whole vibe light and enjoyable. Prices are reasonable, and it’s a great spot to soak in the atmosphere. The food itself was okay—not bad, but not the standout part of the visit. My drink had way too much ice, which was a little disappointing. Also, a heads-up for anyone using the self-service kiosks: watch out when ordering a combo. It’s easy to accidentally add an extra fries order at the end—you won’t need the double portion! Overall, I loved the experience more for the atmosphere than the food, and I’d still recommend stopping in for the fun, classic Portillo’s vibe.
Portillos never changes its consistency. Excellent food but a bit pricey. Plenty of seating on both levels. It has an elevator to get to the bathrooms. Ample of free parking!
